Call for Papers! State of the Map 2011

It’s that time of year again! Get those creative juices flowing, the organizing committee for the annual international conference officially announce the 2011 call for papers. This year there are exciting and engaging new themes like Mapping without borders, Real apps for real maps, and Next Gen. Be sure the check out the guidelines here.

The OpenStreetMap Foundation invite contributions from mappers, academics, geo-hackers and open geodata supporters around the world. If you are involved in OpenStreetMap mapping, coding or community organisation – or if you want the chance to present your ideas or opinions to the OpenStreetMap community, you should submit a paper to the State of the Map 2011!

Deadline for submission is March 15, 2011, but don’t delay! We try to fit in all papers, but with so many wonderful topics, we only have time for the best. Be sure to get yours in early.

It’s a great introduction to the project with some background information, stories of why OSM is groovy (think crisis mapping) as well as a mini “make your first edit” presentation.

WhereCamp5280 November 19th, 2010

Join like minded friends and geo geeks at this years WhereCamp5280 in Denver, Colorado on Friday, November 19th. WhereCamps are unconferences – loosely structured days of talks around a common theme of maps!

State of the Map 2011: September 9-11, 2011

The State of the Map (SotM) organizing committee announces the dates for the 2011 International conference for OpenStreetMap (OSM). An anticipated number of over 250 attendees will meet September 9-11, 2011 in Denver, Colorado.

“September is a delightful time of year in Colorado! The typically mild weather allows for plenty of extracurricular activities to enjoy; from a Rockies baseball game or touring a local microbrewery to hiking or taking a late summer drive in the mountains, there’s so much to do.” says Ariann Nassel, volunteer with the SotM local organizing committee.

The dates were chosen to be before the FOSS4G conference held in Denver, September 12-16. It will allow people interested in both events to enjoy both SotM and FOSS4G within one trip.

A fun competition for the the 2011 SotM logo will be announced soon. The call for papers, sponsorship details, volunteer opportunities and more information will be available before the end of the year.

Denver Selected as Venue for State of the Map 2011

The State of the Map (SotM) organizing committee announce Denver, Colorado, USA as the winning bid for the 2011 International conference for OpenStreetMap (OSM). The annual event will be hosted in September 2011.

There were five proposals to host the annual spectacular event: Vienna, Austria, Havana, Cuba, Denver, Colorado (USA), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Tallinn, Estonia. “Deciding on the best location for State of the Map is always one of our biggest and toughest decisions.” says Henk Hoff, chairman of the SotM organizing committee. Among the deciding factors were location, experience of the local committee and outreach potential to new communities.

“Denver is a clear choice because after four great years in Europe, it’s time to branch out and engage with other international communities.” commented Steve Coast, founder of OpenStreetMap. 2011 will host the fifth annual international conference, attracting over 250 people in attendance. Sponsorship details, volunteer opportunities and more information will be available in the near future.
